Sport in Rome: From CUS to Low-Cost Gyms

A practical guide to affordable sport and fitness for students in the Italian capital — and one of the world's great university cities.
Rome is not, by reputation, a city that makes life easy for students on a tight budget. Its size, cost of living and sprawling geography can all feel daunting on arrival. Yet for sport, the picture is far more encouraging than it might initially appear. The university sport infrastructure is substantial, the facilities are genuinely impressive by European standards, and the student discounts are among the most generous in Italy.
SapienzaSport: Rome's University Sports Hub
The Centro di Servizi SapienzaSport, operated by the Sapienza Università di Roma in partnership with CUS Roma, manages what is one of the largest university sports complexes in Europe. The principal site is the Impianto Tor di Quinto, located at Via delle Fornaci di Tor di Quinto in the northern part of the city — reachable by taking Metro B to Jonio and then bus 69 towards Clodio, alighting at the Tor di Quinto/Fornaci stop. From October to June, a free shuttle runs directly from Piazzale Aldo Moro — the heart of the Sapienza campus — for students and university staff.
The scale of the Tor di Quinto site is remarkable: 100,000 square metres of sporting facilities, comprising two football pitches, a rugby pitch, two five-a-side courts, a multipurpose court, an eight-lane athletics track with field event areas, three tennis courts, beach volleyball, an archery range, two swimming pools (including a 33-metre pool with winter covering), a sauna, a fitness gym, a study room, an internet point and a bar and restaurant reserved for members. The impianto is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 23:00, Saturday from 8:00 to 20:00, and Sunday from 9:00 to 18:00. The secretariat for enrolments is accessible Monday to Friday from 9:30 to 21:00, Saturday from 9:30 to 19:00, and Sunday from 9:30 to 13:00.
Additional Facilities
Beyond Tor di Quinto, further facilities are available to the Sapienza community. The Via de Lollis site offers a multipurpose hall for basketball and volleyball alongside two fitness and bodyweight studios. The Via della Farnesina location, managed jointly with Laziodisud, provides two additional fitness and bodyweight gyms. CUS Roma also operates facilities at Piazzale del Verano, near the Sapienza main campus, and at Baldo degli Ubaldi.
Membership and Pricing
Access to all SapienzaSport facilities requires association membership, with subscriptions approved by the board. Sapienza students benefit from heavily discounted rates — among the lowest of any major Italian university — with full access to all three main sporting sites. Students from other Roman universities and university staff are also eligible for reduced rates, though at slightly higher levels than those for Sapienza's own students. All tariffs are paid in a single solution, either by card or in cash at the point of registration.
Membership includes access to a broad range of activities led by qualified instructors: yoga, Zumba, dance, aqua fitness, martial arts, fitness classes and more — all covered by the annual contribution. Advance booking for all activities is compulsory and can be made up to 48 hours before each session via the SapienzaSport online portal.
Medical Certificates
A medical certificate of sporting fitness is required for most activities. Sapienza students benefit from a dedicated partnership with the Foro Italico University's Poliambulatorio Universitario e di Medicina dello Sport, which issues non-agonistic fitness certificates at discounted conditions for the Sapienza community — a practical convenience for those arriving in Rome without an existing certificate.
The Sporting Offer in Depth
The disciplines available at Tor di Quinto cover the full spectrum of student sporting needs: tennis, rugby, football, basketball, martial arts, archery, athletics, swimming and fitness. Qualified technical staff are present across all activities. For those with agonistic ambitions, the Dual Career programme — run jointly by Sapienza and CUS Roma — supports high-level student athletes in balancing academic commitments with professional training and competition schedules.
Beyond the University
Students not enrolled at Sapienza or another university with a CUS Roma agreement will find Rome's municipal sports offer a useful complement. Roma Capitale publishes official tariffs for its Centri Sportivi Municipali, valid for the period September 2025 to August 2026, covering gyms, pools and multi-sport facilities across the city at regulated public prices. Several of these are conveniently located near major student neighbourhoods. Independent low-cost gym chains also operate across the city, and many offer student introductory deals.
How to Get Started

Subscriptions can be paid on the spot. Once registered, activate your online account to begin booking activities.
