A practical guide to affordable sport and fitness for students in one of Italy's oldest and most athletic university cities.
Padova is a compact, cycle-friendly university city with a student population that has shaped its identity for eight centuries. Sport is woven into daily life, and the options for staying active on a student budget are genuinely impressive — beginning, as in most Italian university cities, with the Centro Universitario Sportivo.
The CUS Padova Network
The Centro Universitario Sportivo di Padova (CUS Padova) has been the city's university sports hub since 1946. It operates two main sites: the flagship Impianti Sportivi "L. Merigliano" at Via Jacopo Corrado 4, and a second campus at Via Giordano Bruno 27, both of which host a wide range of disciplines for students and the general public alike.
One of the most striking features of the Padova offer is the membership structure. The Università di Padova actively supports its students' access to sport: in recent years, the university has run campaigns allowing the entire academic community — students and staff alike — to register with CUS Padova at no cost. This means that, for many, the membership barrier is effectively zero. Once registered, a medical certificate of sporting fitness (non-agonistic) is required to access most courses and activities.
CUSFit: The University Gym
The dedicated fitness centre, CUSFit, is located within the Impianti Sportivi "L. Merigliano" at Via Jacopo Corrado 4. Spanning 250 square metres, it offers a weights area and a calisthenics zone, with a qualified instructor present in the room throughout opening hours.
Pricing for the 2025/2026 season is structured around two access tiers. The Partial Hours option (Monday to Friday, 9:00–16:00, plus Saturday mornings) costs UnIPD students €43 per month, €75 for two months, or €125 for four months, with a €5 daily pass also available. The Full Day option (Monday to Friday, 9:00–21:00, plus Saturday mornings) costs students €48 per month, €85 for two months, €150 for four months, or €295 for an annual subscription. Non-university members pay higher rates — from €63 per month up to €390 annually — making the student discount particularly meaningful. The annual membership runs for 365 days from the date of subscription, excluding August.
No-Pay Activities: Free Sport with Your CUS Card
A distinctive and popular feature of the CUS Padova model is the range of "no-pay" activities: sports that registered members can practise entirely free of charge during designated time slots. These include athletics, five-a-side football, basketball, volleyball and tennis — all available on the university's own facilities without any additional payment beyond the membership card.
Swimming: The Padovanuoto Partnership
CUS Padova does not operate its own swimming pool but has established a partnership with Padovanuoto, one of the city's leading aquatic centres. Registered CUS Padova members who are also UnIPD students receive a 10% discount on all free-swimming subscriptions at Padovanuoto facilities — a straightforward saving that makes regular lap swimming genuinely affordable.
Courses and Beyond
CUSFit aside, CUS Padova runs a broad programme of group classes — from fitness and urban dance to more technical sports disciplines — available to all members at preferential rates. A free trial lesson is permitted for one course at a time, making it easy to try before committing to a full subscription. There is also a NeveCUS programme offering ski trips and slope conventions for students who want to take their activity off-campus during the winter months.
The CUS Padova facilities also include a study room and equipped green spaces — a practical combination for those who want to combine training with revision between sessions.
Beyond the University
Students not enrolled at UnIPD, or those seeking additional options, will find a growing range of independent gyms and fitness centres across the city. Several cater explicitly to a university audience and offer student-friendly rates or introductory packages. The city centre is small enough to be navigated almost entirely by bicycle, which makes commuting to and from sporting facilities straightforward.
How to Get Started
